Just relax. he is gossip the other person, not you. So, sit back and listen. Figure out why he hates her previous violin teacher. It shows your empathy and create rapport; it's also a perfect chance for a teacher to grow, knowing a student's preference.
Then, repeat it back to her what she was telling you. it shows that you care about her experience and making effort to understand what she prefers. This usually opens the student up, thus she'll be more supportive of your teaching approach.
In some cases, the student just makes inappropriate common in any sense towards her teacher. when this happens just shut up and listen; don't try to stop her. After acknowledging what she says, just gently tell her to be respectful to her teacher.
Again, people always want their thoughts to be heard, carefully; that creates affection. Once that's been done, they tend to listen to what you've to say more sincerely.
